An Indie Writer's Life

Writer's picture: TeresaTeresa

What's it like to be an Indie writer? Much of my life takes place in my head but pours out through my fingertips. That's right! I spend a lot of time — ALONE! Many of us are introverts. We've probably been telling stories most of our lives. I started telling stories before I could write. The oldest of six kids, I had a ready-made audience. It was natural to invent characters, imagine the perfect setting, and then develop a plot that captured the attention of my admirers. I wrote my first stories in third grade. I still have a few of them tucked away for posterity's sake.

Indie writers are the nerds of the literary world.

We burn the midnight oil inventing our tales. Carefully weaving each strand of the story into a finished garment, we self consciously adorn ourselves in hopes that someone will take notice. We love it when perfect strangers show an interest in our craft. It may be easy for us to spend hours alone, but we miss much of what the rest of the world is doing because we write. Yet, we long to stumble across readers as rare as they may be.

I write psychological thrillers.

That's not every Indie writer's cup of tea, but I'm most at home among twisted plots that lead to mystery and mayhem. A heavy emphasis on the psychology of what makes people do what they do drives my stories. I want to get inside the head of a killer, behind the closed doors of a hoarder, creep into the bedroom of a lonely, old woman or just under the skin of an angry husband. I want to witness my characters being themselves when they think nobody can see what they're doing.
